[divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”5″]Growing up in the Midwest, I learned how to play five different musical instruments which evoked a drive to nourish creativity that has never ceased. I started dabbling in photography as a kid by entering my projects in the county fair, and really flourished in writing classes.
When I went to college at Purdue University, I met friends and became involved in the local music scene, which inspired me to join the news staff at the student newspaper called The Exponent. I was never a hard news reporter, but rather a features writer who enjoyed telling the eccentric stories of artists and musicians who may have been overlooked for softer acts.
That didn’t change once I graduated and landed a job at the local newspaper. I was asked to take over a longstanding music column my friend had penned and jumped at the opportunity to highlight hometown acts as well as the larger tours that came to the area. One summer, a publicist reached out to me to cover a traveling metal music festival and offered me a photo pass. This opportunity really changed my world. Being right in front of legendary bands like Motorhead and Slayer and capturing the experience both in photo and written form was unfathomable. It was not a career path that just easily presented itself to a journalist from the Midwest. But it did. As the late, great Tom Petty said, I had a choice to “run down the dream.”
I made sacrifices for my work, but was grateful for it and still am.” My work has graced me with the opportunity to interview bands like Anthrax, Rob Zombie, Styx, Monster Magnet, Korn, Cannibal Corpse, Slayer, Slipknot, Rob Halford from Judas Priest, Nikki Sixx, the Dirty Heads, Opeth, Arch Enemy, Sirius XM’s Jose Mangin, Trixie Mattel, many more, and photograph triple that amount.
The Midwest wasn’t my end-goal though. My dreams were always bigger than my rural hometown in northeast Wisconsin and my goals drew me to California, and Los Angeles, like so many others. I continued my work as a music journalist in Southern California, working for publications like OC Weekly, LA Weekly, Kerrang! Magazine and SoCal Music Today and still take on editorial projects when I find an inspiring artist or band.
My creative interests continued to grow as well as my skill set and I looked for work beyond journalism to satisfy those needs. I accepted full-time positions that combined my passion for creativity and became a global content strategy leader with a 10-year record in multi-channel content marketing management, leading strategic planning for initiatives across diverse platforms. I have helped drive audience engagement for:
